Hellen - Detroit Band of the Month - September 2008

Fall is almost here, the temperature is cooling down, leaves are going to start turning color and falling down...

As we say goodbye to summer, we've also got to say goodbye to another Detroit band that is calling it quits at the end of this month, and that band is HELLEN!

It is for this reason that we here at RIFF2 have decided to say goodbye to HELLEN by spotlighting them all month long on RIFF2!!

Here is a little info about HELLEN for those of you who need a little history lesson:

"Hellen are five girls that play rock and roll, straight up, just the way they like it. The girls have been plucking away for four years and have made quite a name for themselves in Detroit. Before their first show on New Years Eve 2004 none of them had any experience playing live rock and roll. But that all changed once people caught a glimpse of these raucus ladies. The heavy hitting rythm section is laid down by Emily Schaller on drums and Amanda Mentzer on bass. Charmain Azzopardi wails on her guitar while Katie Galazka dominates on vocals. Hellen has been described as a modern day version of The Runaways, quite a compliment for the girls especially when you look at who came out of The Runaways (Joan Jett, Lita Ford etc). Hellen has what a lot of bands don't have and that is the ability to put egos aside. They have dedicated a lot of their time and hard work to help Emily wiht her fundraising afforts for Cystic Fibrosis(CF). Emily has CF and organizes the annual Just Let Me Breathe concert that benefits her Rock CF Foundation. Hellen is in it together and are fighting the good fight against this horrid genetic disease that affects 30,000 people nationwide. Nothing stands in the way of the girls from Hellen."
